Overview The 1.4km Silvertown Tunnel Project, part of a joint venture involving Riverlinx CJV and Transport for London (TfL), is a major infrastructure development directed at improving traffic flow, air quality at the Blackwall Tunel, and connectivity between the Greenwich Peninsula and Silvertown. A critical part of this project involved laying power cables for the tunnel’s energy supply. To ensure security, safety, and ease of access, the supply and installation of this circa 1.9 metre x 50 metre specialist duct cover solution incorporated security locking for access restriction as well as assisted lift covers for operative ease of handling to gain entry for inspection and maintenance. Secondary fall arrest grids were included within the solution for additional operative safety.
The trench covers installed for the Silvertown Tunnel project were carefully engineered to ensure long-term durability. The assisted lift covers not only provided protection for the power cables beneath but also feature an assisted lift feature mechanism, which significantly reduces the need for intensive manual labour during maintenance periods. This innovative design allows maintenance teams to safely and efficiently access the power cables without the risk of strain or the use of specialised equipment, ensuring smooth operation with minimal disruption. The combination of strength, accessibility, and safety of our innovative solutions supported the smooth operations of the tunnel’s power supply. Our Assisted Lift Covers supported the goals of the Riverlinx CJV and TfL joint venture which aims to address critical needs and priorities in East London’s transport infrastructure by spring 2025. EJ is proud to not only support current infrastructure needs but also to contribute to the development of a robust and future ready transport network that meets the evolving demands of urban mobility. |
